 Stress at Work

Stress is not the employee's inability to cope with excessive workloads and the unreasonable demands of incompetent and bullying managers; stress is a consequence of the employer's failure to provide a safe system of work as required by the UK Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. Blaming the sufferer of stress for suffering stress is an admission of failure to fulfil this obligation of duty of care.

Hendrickson (1979) defines teacher burnout as "physical, emotional, and attitudinal exhaustion" that begins with a feeling of uneasiness and mounts as the joy of teaching begins to gradually slip away.

                                                                          Teacher Burnout

“the adverse reaction people have to excessive pressure or other types of demand placed on them”

Welcome to my page on stress at work. It's not a new phenomenon, yet still something that doesn't have a real solution. Hundreds if not thousands of teachers suffer from it everyday. This page is mainly for information and to provide important links to help those suffering from workplace stress. We have a page dedicated to bullying as well.

I know only too well the effects of stress on the body. Having been a teacher in a school in special measures having had to cope with considerable pressure placed upon me by those in senior management; coupled with seriously bad behaviour by the students and you have a recipe for serious stress.

I hope this site helps you in some way. And this page is dedicated to directing you to the links that will give you more information. It is not intended as a means of diagnosing any kind of depression or otherwise. My best advice would be to see your doctor if you are in any doubt as to whether you are suffering from stress.  Pettya

A Health and Safety Issue

The Health and Safety at Work Act requires employers to provide a 'safe system of work' . Do you feel afraid to go into work?  Unable to cope with your workload? Do you feel uncomfortable in your workplace or worry about what will happen next? If so, your employer is not doing enough to help you.

Does your school have a safety rep. Ask them to perform a stress audit of your union's members. Ask to see your headteacher, or if they are your source of stress go through your union. There is a way out of the dark, dont ever feel like you are alone.

The Health and Safety Executive has established management standards for reducing stress at work.

Attitudes towards stress at work need to change in schools across the country. Excuses such as 'special measures' and 'ofsted' simply dont wash. To dismiss it as the teacher 'not coping' then blaming that on them is quite disgusting in my opinion. Its a failing managements way of pushing blame away from them and onto the struggling teacher. There are links forther down for unions and health and safety law.

Real life personal experiences

The Head and Deputy used to sit in there office and summon me - I went back after my first time off with stress caused by them and they called me into their office to ask me when I would snap out of it!

TES

"I found myself dreading going into work on a Monday morning to the extent that I would suffer panic attacks throughout the weekend.

"After 18 months of feeling like this I woke up one morning and literally couldn't get out of bed. My wife persuaded me to go and see my GP who said I had had a complete nervous breakdown. After five months off sick I finally made the decision to leave teaching. "
