Born on the 27th of June 1975 Tobias Vincent Maguire ( A.K.A Tobey Maguire) graced the world with his presence, his parents Vincent, a chef, and Wendy, a secretary, had him very young, being only 20 years and 18 years respectively, they married when Tobey was two and separated the same year.
Tobey originally wanted to be a chef like his father, but after his mother offered him $100 to take drama instead of home economics he took her up on her offer, he quit school at the tender age of 13 to concentrate on acting.
Tobey’s early work began with TV commercials, he starred in several including McDonalds and Doritos, he made his TV debut in 1989 in a Rodney Dangerfield comedy special for HBO, Tobey’s other early roles include the 1990 Nickelodeon special “ Tales From the Whoop: Hot Rod Brown, Class Clown” he also had guest roles in shows including Blossom, Roseanne, Eerie Indiana and Parenthood, the latter being his first collaboration with Leonardo DiCaprio.
Tobey made his film debut starring alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in the movie “This Boy’s Life"(1993) which also starred Robert DeNiro and Ellen Barkin, his first lead debut was in the horror feature “ The Adventures Of The Red Baron” (1994) in which he played the character Jimmy Spencer, starring alongside Mickey Rooney, other roles in 1994 included TV movies “ Spoils Of War ” and “ A Child’s Cry For Help“, Tobey had other small roles in movies including “S.F.W” (1994) and cameo appearances in others such as “Healer” (1994), however in 1995 the actor’s luck changed, in the Oscar nominated short film “Duke Of Groove” He played Kate Capshaw’s son, this was the movie that gave Tobey the attention he needed to grab more starring roles.
Also in 1995 Tobey starred in a low budget picture with his friend Leonardo DiCaprio called “Don’s Plum”, the film, later the subject of a lawsuit brought by the pair was later settled with the producers for the sum of $10 million and the guarantee that the film would not be released in the U.S.A or Canada
Tobey starred in another TV movie “Seduced By Madness: The Diana Borchardt Story (1996) before taking the role of J.T in the independent feature “Joyride” (1997), Tobey got his first role directed by Ang Lee in “The Ice Storm” (1997), Tobey played the part of Paul Hood, he also narrated the film, starring alongside Kevin Kline, Sigourney Weaver and Joan Allen. Tobey’s next role would be in Woody Allen’s “Deconstructing Harry” (1997), his character being one of Allen’s character Harry Block’s Alter egos- a shoe salesman called Harvey Stern.
1998 brought Tobey another starring role, in Pleasantville he played a boy obsessed with a ‘50’s sitcom who with his sexually liberated sister is magically transported there via a magic remote control, starring again with Joan Allen who played his sitcom mother and William H. Macey who he would later work with in Seabiscuit.
Tobey’s career rocketed in 1999, he starred in Ride With The Devil, his second movie directed by Ang Lee, he played the character Jacob Roedel, a German born Southerner who with his friend Jack (Skeet Ulrich), join the confederate-sympathizing Bushwackers.
Another lead role for Tobey came in the Lasse Hallstrom movie “The Cider House Rules” (1999), his character Homer Wells is an orphan raised by Dr Wilbur Larch (Michael Caine) who tutors him in obstetrics and gynaecology, hoping he’ll take over from him when the time comes, also starring with Charlize Theron and Paul Rudd.
The year 2000 gave Tobey the role of James Leer in “Wonder Boys”, starring alongside another movie veteran Michael Douglas, Tobey played the part of a moody, compulsive lying student of Douglas’s character Grady Tripp. In 2001 Tobey Leant his voice to the Beagle puppy Lou in Cats & Dogs.
Tobey’s biggest year came in 2002, he landed the part of Spider-Man/Peter Parker, directed by Sam Raimi and based on the Marvel character, the movie really brought Tobey into the public eye, he agreed to do two sequels after the success of the first movie, which made an incredible $114 million in it’s weekend debut.
2003 brought Tobey another starring role, in “Seabiscuit” he played Johnny “Red” Pollard, the half blind jockey who rode the small horse to victory, the movie was another big hit taking $120 million at the U.S box office.
In 2004 Tobey reprised his role as Spider-Man/Peter Parker in the first sequel Spider-Man 2, Spider-Man 3 is in the pipeline for 2007.
