You can find Gau running around loose in the Veldt. He first meets up with Sabin and Cyan. He gets an official name for Cyan, which I personally find quite amusing... "Mr. Thou!"

Special Skill: Rage/Leap
GAU CANNOT USE THE FIGHT ABILITY! I just had to clear that up if anyone was confused. Depending on your location, Gau may or may not be able to use the Leap ability. Actually, this ability is available ONLY on the Veldt (You know, that place with the different music from everywhere else?).

As noted, before, he can't use the Fight ability. Instead of having Fight, he has Rage, which allows him to use the same abilities as the monsters he's lept into. A full list of these monsters and their abilities can be found on the "Rage/Sketch" page!

Quite possibly one of the most mysterious people in the entire series, Shadow hides dressed all in black clothing. You cannot obtain Shadow as a full-time party member until the World of Ruin, if you saved him of course! He'll make a few appearances in the World of Balance, but does eventually leave.

Special Skill: Throw

Wow, how useful... You are able to throw any weapon the you are NOT using at the time at the enemy. I'm not sure if it's relics also, but I do believe you can also throw Armor. I personally haven't found this skill too helpful, but that of course is me too!

 

Setzer Gabbiani

You first meet Setzer when he steals Celes from the opera house thinking that she is the real Maria. Eventually, Celes and Setzer flip a coin to see what happens: Tails means Setzer marries Celes, Heads means he joins them with their journey. Edgar gives Celes a Two-Headed Coin so that she can't lose. The Airship becomes extremely helpful for reaching remote places!

Special Skill: Slot/GP Rain
This is, in my opinion, the second worst technique in the game! Most of the time, I end up getting this skill called Lagomorph, which is an extremely weak curing ability. Basically, this skill takes a ton of luck and a lot of chance!

 

Mog

I love the moogles! Okay, anyway, Mog can be recruited initially in the World of Balance, but you only have one chance to get him! I think he's well worth the time and patience to get him, as he can become very valuable with his Dance techniques!

Yes, my favorite character (go see Thamasa's Painter to see what I mean). At first, she may seem like a spoiled brat, but she does come really helpful. Even if you don't use her ability, her fighting skills are very good! If you have the patience to build her up very high, expect an exceptionally good fighter!

Yet another "can't obtain until the World of Ruin" character. You first must fight Umaro, but he will eventually join you... as long as Mog is in your party! Umaro is not able to equip anything but Relics, and there are two that you will want on him to get every last ability open: Rage Ring and Blizzard Orb. Umaro can toss party members at the enemy and use a blizzard attack if these two are equipped. The blizzard attack does get annoying sometimes, but the throwing of part members is helpful.

I basically wrote the description for his skill, if you can call it a skill, above. The only down side is that you cannot control when Umaro does these abilities, but they can sometimes help out!
