Utah Sacred Harp Singing
Join us to sing traditional American shape note
hymns and songs from The Sacred Harp
Sacred Harp singing (also called shape note or fasola singing) is a nondenominational community musical activity emphasizing participation, not performance. We sing from The Sacred Harp, an oblong songbook first published in 1844. The book includes four-part, a cappella psalm tunes, fuging tunes, odes and anthems written by early American composers (1770 - 1810), and settings of folk songs and revival hymns (circa 1810 - 1860). Current editions of The Sacred Harp also contain songs in these styles written by living composers.
Everyone is welcome to sing or listen. No experience or membership is required. Books will be available to borrow or purchase.
