Westport Community Band has established its annual dues at $60. We rely on dues to cover some of our operating expenses, including stipend to the musical director. Payment of dues is voluntary though strongly encouraged, and if it presents a true financial hardship to a member, he/she may pay less or none. Many members contribute more than $60. Dues may be considered charitable deductions for tax purposes. Please make your check payable to Westport Community Band. Our treasurer is Lisa Brodlie, 41 Birch Hill Road, Weston 06883. The following is brought to our attention by Nan Haavik. IT IS NOT OFFERED AS TAX ADVICE; PLEASE DISCUSS WITH YOUR TAX PROFESSIONAL.
From IRS Publication 526. "Car expenses. You can deduct unreimbursed out-of-pocket expenses, such as the cost of gas and oil, that are directly related to the use of your car in giving services to a charitable organization. You cannot deduct general repair and maintenance expenses, depreciation, registration fees, or the costs of tires or insurance. If you do not want to deduct your actual expenses, you can use a standard mileage rate of 14 cents a mile to figure your contribution. You can deduct parking fees and tolls, whether you use your actual expenses or the standard mileage rate. You must keep reliable written records of your car expenses. " Nan adds: Since the stated purpose of our organization is educational and charitable, and since practice is necessary in order to fulfill this purpose, the IRS may allow you to take your mileage to/from rehearsals and performances as a charitable deduction. This deduction is available if you itemize deductions and is figured as actual expenses OR the standard charitable mileage rate of 14 cents a mile. You must keep records to verify the deduction. [Editorial comment: It is interesting to note that even the IRS feels that practice is necessary! CH]
