     So what is Roleplay, anyway?

The definition of roleplaying varies depending on the setting.  It is often conducted in chatrooms, on message boards, on MUDs and MUSHes, and even in real life (in a form known as LARP).  Because message boards are not as live as the other three, a message board roleplayer's contribution is less frequent, but carries more content.  That is, one who participates in a message board roleplay will have to compensate for infrequent "posting" by saying more when they do write!

Of course, this hardly answers the question as to what roleplaying really is.

Roleplaying is a form of fantasy where, in simple terms, players create or borrow a character and write from that character's point of view, rather than his or her own.  On message boards, it is comparable to a story circle; however, instead of telling an entire portion of the story before passing it on to another, each person posts from the point of view of his or her character, a method comparible to a novel with many main characters and many points of view.  Roleplayers enjoy this interaction and often discuss the storyline that they are forming before hand.

Why do people roleplay?  There are several reasons, and they all depend on the person.  Some people do so as to escape from reality.  Some chose to roleplay to meet people and interact in a creative way.  Others wish to hone their literary skills or gain inspiration for other literary works.  By all means, it conducts all of these functions.  It has proven its ability to improve writing and grammar, creative skills, and social skills.  It has given new players friends. and it has brought current friends closer.  It has proven as an escape from the dramas of real life, by allowing emotions to be expressed in a much more harmless setting.  No matter which of these drives a person to roleplay, all who do it enjoy it-- or they wouldn't be doing it.

Naturally, roleplaying isn't for everyone, even as many unsuspecting people can get into it if they tried.  The Zelda Community itself is not souly a roleplaying community or even primarily focused on that aspect any more than any other, and it is for the members to decide what they want to participate in and what they do not.  However, if you do wish to participate in roleplaying, there are rules and ettiquette to be followed, and they will be discussed.
